Above the southern bay
variegated bands of cloud
smudge and soften
the stiletto of the Monterey Peninsula
with pastel blue-grays,
while the declining sun
— not yet caught behind
that expanding canopy —
casts a sharp light from the west
and the sky above sea’s horizon
seems to loom closer than the waters below
that curl white with foam in the wind.
