Above the southern bay
variegated bands of cloud
smudge and soften
the stiletto of Monterey Peninsula
with pastel blue-grays.
The declining sun,
not yet caught behind
the expanding canopy
casts a sharp light from the west
while the sky above sea’s horizon
seems nearer than the waters
that bend white in the wind.
